»» @TechTune - Back in those days some phones (especially payphones) were "rotary dialed ", not "touchtone". Answering machines needed tones to operate them remotely, so the better answering machines provided a little tonemaking device to use if you were using a rotary phone. Salesmen used to carry a similar device with phone number tones in memory, and all they would need to do is press a button and hold it to the mouthpiece and the tones would "dial" the number automatically from any phone.
